Hello everyone,

yes ladies and gents it’s Jay21’s birthday today. I wanna thank all the people who have e-mailed texted me and phone me wishing me a happy birthday! I also want to thank all my great friends for coming to the party last night… you guys showing up really means alot for me… so again thank you so much.. and the who couldn’t make it, well it’s all good always next year.  many people been asking me ” how does it feel being older” all i have to say is that I don’t feel any different from yesterday.  A number doesn’t mean anything; thats what I’ve learnt over the years. But the big star of the night was my dog.  I got attacked by people! people were loving her off! so here some photos of the great party last night . note: you’ll see my dog in most of the shots… you know.

Many people been asking about all the steps I take when I do illustrations. I did a quick one with the blond ice poster.  So I decided to do a more detaiedl version of what I did for a job i just completed for Umbro a few days ago. So sit back and enjoy the ride;)

1- I start doing some research then started getting an idea of what i’m working with, then I do a few sketches, with the directions that are asked in the e-mail.

2-  Send the best sketches to the to see what direction they’re leaning towards.  Once directions come back, time do do some clean up on one of the sketches.

3-  From here, I send it in Note: I do not scan my sketches in very high quality (75dpi) because in the end, I will not be incorporating the sketch into the final.

4- once scanned, I open up photoshop and do some colour testing.  I do not do this in illustrator because it takes too long.  In photoshop I can do this in 5 to 10 mins because I’m just throwing a few colours together to figure out the colour scheme. When I’m happy with a colour, I pit a small sample on the left corner because I can sample that colour once i’m in illustrator.

5- Now I open up illustrator and I place the image i did in photoshop in it to sample the colours. When i sample them, i always put that sample in the swatch library so when i need them its in there.  Once i’m done i trash the photoshop image and import the original black and white sketch.

6- Once its imported, i double click the layer and dim it to 50%. i do this because it makes it easier to see when i’m drawing over it with the pen tool.

7- now i make a new layer and start drawing over it, i usually just draw the whole thing out b4 adding any fills or anything.  i can find it faster after when i’m filling it in with the fill colour.

9- I start adding in the fill.(remember its quick for me to see what colour is what because of I did my colour scheme in photoshop).

10- once i fill it all in, i send it off to the employer to see if its ok. Once i get the ok from them its back to work.

11. i start shaping the line work i want and fix a few things here and their like corners (i generally don’t like having corners in my work).

12- I finally get the image of how the boot looks like. So now i can Finish off the boots. (usually i get the product right away but this time it wasn’t the case)

13- i work on the boot and come up with 2 colours i’m happy with it, then put it on him.

14- from here i put in their logo and try to figure out how i’m going to layout the tag line for this boot.

15- once thats done, I add some effects then send the two versions of it to see what makes the cut

16- Now you enjoy the e-mail at 3:30am with the words ” It looks great. good job” now i can go sleep.

i got lucky this week. i meet one of my heros Jamel Shabazz.

for the people that don’t know who he is, well he is prob one of the most important people in hip-hop world; i say this because he was on the front lines from the beginning, documenting the whole movement in the 70s.  if he hadn’t of done it well i dont think we would have very much to look back on.  this is very important because we have these things so our kids’ kids can see where this great movement started from.

his photography has always inspired us to look back in the past and enjoy the great times and also think about the bad things we has humans beings have done to one another.

Red Bull academy threw a great party. He had his new book there “which is a must get book”.. i’ve have always heard good things about him… how he is super amazing… and well he really is what people say.  one of the coolest cats i have ever meet.  super open minded and loves to hear about what his work means to you.  really great experience.  i was lucky i got invited to this show.

probably the funniest thing that night was me walking in with a hotdog, with the people at the door looking at me funny and the people inside as well “wtf? hes eating a hotdog in here?” i know i know im ghetto at times… what can i do.
So again if your in a book store look for his books… grab one or 2!  you wont be disappointed.
